I’m forever trying a new mascara, I honestly couldn’t tell you if I’ve ever repurchased a mascara for the past three years. I even thought my last favourite from L’Oreal was a keeper – I’m a Hippie Chick Convert – L’Oreal Mascara – but I must have been wrong.
To be honest, it’s not that I didn’t love that mascara, I really did. I’m just trying to get my makeup collection to be more cruelty free and therefore I decided to go ahead and try the NYX Doll Eye Waterproof black mascara (£8, ASOS).
On first look, the wand didn’t excite me at all. It’s thin and doesn’t really look like it would do anything dramatic to your lashes. However, the thinness actually allows the wand to get right into the root of your lashes. This create a fuller looking lash line, which I ain’t complaining about.
I find this mascara, as you can see from the swatches, to be very lengthening rather than thickening. It defines the lashes great, but when you apply more than one layer they do begin to clump together if you’re not careful.
It’s definitely a dramatic difference in the before and after and I do enjoy the look of long, defined lashes – so that’s definitely a plus from me.
I always choose a waterproof mascara as I find they hold the curl all day long. They also tend not to smudge on your eyes throughout the day and this one is no exception. This mascara doesn’t budge – no smudging on my eyelid or under my eye. Wahooo!
Taking this mascara off however, is a difficult task. I use coconut oil to remove my make up and even that struggles to get this mascara off. I find rather than breaking down, the mascara seems to come off in clumps when cleansing. Very strange. It may take a bit longer to remove than I’m used to, but as it means it sticks around during the day I ain’t hating on it.
Overall, I think this is a great mascara. The price is great, the longevity and look of the mascara is super pretty, it’s just a bit of a pain to remove. Would I repurchase this mascara? Probably not, but hey – when do I ever!
