After seeing some of my dog portraits via my Facebook page (casual plug to follow me, I’m @thebeccabynature), my mum got in touch to see if I could draw one of her friend’s spaniels for her 60th birthday present. Of course, I was thrilled. Drawing dogs is one of my favourite things to do.

The original image.

Jessie. A gorgeous springer spaniel with super long highlighted ears and gorgeous freckled fur. My mum loved this photo of Jessie looking out of the window and wanted me to recreate it. It was a challenge trying to get enough detail in the image to have it be recognisable as the photograph whilst keeping the focus on Jessie herself, but the result was something I was really proud of.

The final piece.

For colours, I didn’t want to overwhelm the image with loads of different tones. I knew grey was a good choice for the ‘sparkles’ as well as the name, so kept this for the window and also the pillow that’s on the muted red sofa. Creating the tones on Jessie’s fur was a new challenge but one that I think I pulled off. I love all the texture and pattern within her fur itself.
