I feel like there’s been a lot of cats on my Instagram for illustrations recently, I feel cat lovers are coming through with their requests and I’m starting to miss drawing dogs. When Paul got in touch to ask me to draw his dog Bodhi for his wife’s birthday I was over the moon. I’ve worked with Paul on a few different pieces now and he’s such a great guy. The reference image.

When doing a pet portrait I’ll ask whether you want your dog/cat/rabbit in a certain position or if you’d like an exact image copied. In this case, Paul wanted an exact copy of a beautiful picture of Bodhi lying down. I love how Bodhi has so many different golden tones in his fur and I couldn’t wait to start drawing him. As always with my portraits, I sent a draft copy to Paul first to make sure it was right and after a couple of tweaks, I was ready to start colouring him in.

The final piece.

I’m so so happy with how Bodhi came out, I really love how the texture of depth of the fur comes through in the illustration and I also love how Paul wanted Bodhi to be the main focus with just a slight grey blur around him, to really make him stand out. Do you like how this image turned out?
