Dogs are so so cute and my goodness, is this malamute one of the most handsome dogs I’ve ever seen and yes, he has his own Instagram @sir_handsomes. I’d definitely recommend going to follow him for more cuteness pictures but anyway… I was kindly asked by his owner Kim to do a portrait. Pet portraits of course, are some of favourite things to do, especially when I’m drawing someone as handsome as Kai here. I’d not drawn a husky/malamute type dog before so I was super excited to get started.

The reference image.

Look at this happy face. From the tongue to the fluff, I absolutely couldn’t wait to get stuck into drawing Kai. Kim decided that she didn’t want any hearts, name or anything around Kai, so all the focus would be on him and I definitely think this was a great idea. He’s so handsome that the image says it all.

The final piece.

As I do with all my pet portraits, I always send across my first sketch and then another image once I’ve started to colour the pet in. This is to make sure the client is happy with the composition and also the colours used. With Kai, there was a point where Kim wasn’t sure on the eyes, I’d used the reference image quite literally and this meant that his eyes weren’t exactly the same. This was easily changed and Kim was over the moon with the final piece. It even got a feature on Sir Handsomes instagram, so be sure to check it out!
