As a small business owner, I feel I understand what all small businesses go through. You can never be sure of what people will want to buy, how much people will buy and honestly it’s so hard for those who have a small business as their full time career. For me personally I have a full time job that pays the bills and my small business allows me to have more disposable income for trips, days out and little treats for myself. Of course my dream would be to run becca by nature full time, but I feel it will be a little while before that becomes a reality.

As a small business owner myself, I know how much the little things can help to support a business and it doesn’t have to be through purchasing a product. I wanted to share things that either as a small business you can request or as a potential buyer/follower of a brand you can do to spread the word and show your support.

Like and comment on posts.

Algorithm on most social platforms is a huge influence on how many people see a certain image. Those first 10 minutes are so important to whether the post will be shown to a big or small audience. Whether it goes to the top of the feed or whether it gets left for only those who visit your profile to see. For this reason, if you see something you like on Instagram don’t just think ‘oo that’s nice’ make sure to give it a like. If you love the colours, leave a comment, let the creator know. Even just an emoji can make the post go far and it takes all of 10 seconds for you to do.

Share posts.

In line with the above, sharing a post helps to spread the word to a much wider audience than those already following the creator. If you really like something or like the message it provides, why not share it to your story or put it on your Facebook timeline. Other people will then see this and maybe follow the person’s business and add more likes to their posts. It’s a circle of life and it means so much!

Leave a review.

If you have brought something from a small business, leave them a review on their platform. Whether it’s an actual review on Etsy or Facebook or just sending them a message to say how much you liked something, it not only brings a hell of a lot of confidence to the creator but it always provides confidence in other potential buyers and they’ll be more likely to make a purchase.

Shout them out.

Tell your friends. You don’t have to put things on your stories or out in public if you don’t want to, why not mention them in a passing conversation. ‘Oh have you seen this cute post from becca by nature?’. Word of mouth is one of the best ways to promote a business without having to spend a penny and it goes far, so make sure to spread the word.

Tag your friends.

A lot of creators will make posts with questions or maybe they have a quote or product that you think one of your friends would appreciate. Why not tag them in the post, who knows it might lead to the business gaining a new follower or if they really like the product, maybe making a purchase. That tag won’t only make the creator happy, it’ll show your friend you’re thinking of them too. Two birds, one piece of bread (I’m vegan, so can’t bring myself to say stone – don’t ask).

Pay full price.

For many small businesses each month can never be predicted in terms of income. I’ve had months where I’ve earnt £350+ and others where it’s been less than £100. It’s never predictable how much will be earnt and for many, this can be a full time career and something they’re relying on to pay their bills. For this reason, make sure to pay full price. Yes someone might be nice enough to give you a discount if you ask nicely but if you can afford to pay the extra £3 for example, pay it. It means a hell of a lot to many small business owners.
