As someone who loves animals and also funny puns, it was only a matter of time before I started to incorporate them into my blog/art wasn’t it? I’ve been seeing so many amazing artworks of giraffes recently and really wanted to draw my own, so here I bring you ‘You’re having a giraffe’.

It wouldn’t be my blog if it wasn’t a little educational. After all, I myself love learning and like to also hopefully provide you with some little facts you maybe didn’t know. So let’s get to it!

The tallest mammals on Earth.

Giraffes are tall, we all know they are, but did you know that their legs alone can be 6 feet tall. A fully grown Northern giraffe averages between 4.6 to 6.1m, that’s almost 4 of me?!

Not only do they have super long legs, they can also run almost 35 miles an hour over short distances and if they’re going at their usual pace, a speedy 10mph. That’s twice as fast as us mere humans!

Drinking habits.

As with many wild animals, although they of course need water, being in the dessert means it’s not overly accessible. For this reason, they get their daily source of water from the food they eat.

When they do get the chance to eat, you’ll often find them kneeling or spreading their legs in a funny position. This is because the neck to body ratio means that they can’t actually reach the floor with their neck when standing.

I’m still standing.

If you haven’t already guessed by the previous section, giraffes actually spend most of their lives standing up. A calf can stand up and walk after about an hour or being born, of which their mum will give birth to them standing up. They even sleep standing up and when they do, it’s only 5 – 30 minutes in a 24 period! How crazy is that?!

One of a kind.

Much like the human fingerprint, did you know two giraffes spots won’t be the same?! Also we don’t hear giraffes make a noise but that’s due to their low pitch being below the human hearing limit. They actually snort, make flute like sounds and even hiss. It’s all in a day’s work.

Overall, giraffes are pretty incredible creatures don’t you think?!
