Wear Test: Maybelline SuperStay ’24 hour’ Foundation

Don’t you just love a product that claims to be 24-hour wear because honestly, on how many occasions have you worn the same makeup for that length of time? I mean, even at a festival we all use baby wipes to take our makeup off right? Anyway, I thought I’d start a bit of a new series on my blog to see if makeup’s claims are all they’re cracked up to be and it starts with a foundation test.

Now, we all want a foundation that lasts throughout the day making you look flawless with no touch ups and plenty of coverage (not all of us are blessed with perfect skin) and when I saw this Maybelline SuperStay 24 hour foundation, although not new, it clicked in my head that this would be a great product review to do.

I’ve not really had any Maybelline foundations in the past and decided to go with the shade Sand, as it looked like a warm toned medium light shade that would suit my skin when I’ve got a little bit of fake tan on. There weren’t many testers in the shop, so I just had to risk it for a biscuit and luckily, the shade matches me pretty well.

This foundations states on the bottle that it’s full coverage, with a soft matte finish. When looking on the Boots website, it also states that it’s a lightweight high pigmentation coverage that’s suitable for all skin types and provides all day wear, up to 24 hours. It’s reasonably priced at £9.99 and I picked mine up from Boots (as there’s always great deals on, in this case it was buy one get one half off).

The foundation is quite liquidy and when applying, I found that two pumps was enough to cover my face. I applied the foundation with my Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge (£5.99, Boots) and as I always do with my foundation, I set it with the RCMA Translucent powder (£13, Beauty Bay).

The consistency of the foundation when on my face is smooth and it creates a great base for putting things on top. I didn’t find that any of my blush, bronzer or face powders dragged when putting them on and they went over it smoothly, like it was meant to be.

As you can see from the pictures of when I first applied the foundation, it looks smooth, flawless and definitely high coverage. Now at the moment I’m quite blessed that I don’t have any major spots, but I definitely have a lot of red pigmentation around the sides of my face and plenty of pores around my t-zone. On first impression, I was pretty amazed by the foundation.

Throughout the day, I did notice that the product started to break down after about 3 -4 hours. It mainly started happening around the perimeters of my face (maybe where I’m always pushing my hair back) and also on the nose. My t-zone seems to start looking oily throughout the day, whereas when I first applied the foundation, it made me look like a silky matte but not too flat. (Yes, that was me being a poet).

At the time I took the final pictures, the foundation had been on for 12 hours, as I first applied it around 9.30am and these last images are from 9.30pm. As you can see, the foundations seems to have clung to the centre of my face a lot better than the sides but to be fair, where it has wore off it’s done it quite seamlessly so there’s not a big blotchy line where it’s disappeared.

Overall, I definitely think this foundation wears for a long time. With some others from my collection, I’ll come home from work and it’s as if I never put any on at the start of the day. As it did make my skin look quite oily in the t-zone and my skins quite dry, I probably wouldn’t recommend this to anyone with oily skin, unless you’ve applied a primer and set with a powder, keeping it topped up throughout the day. It’s not 24-hours, but it’s definitely worth a shot if you’re after a long-lasting full coverage foundation.

Is there any foundations out there that do last 24 hours? I’d love to know your stories about wearing a product for a long time, so be sure to leave them in the comments below.

Love, always.

    1. I’ve been really impressed with it so far! And thank you, it’s the Rouge Velvet Lipstick from Bourjois is Joli’carminos (I may have spelt that wrong) x

  1. I think that the foundation looks great on you in the pictures, but the way you described it breaking down… oof. I’ll probably be sticking to my L’Oreal Pro Matte, which is a similar, more matte finish (which I love!). You look stunning as usual, by the way!
    Great post!

    1. It lasts really well, especially with a good powder to set it in. I just find it starts to get a bit oily around 5 hours in, which doesn’t bother me too much. If you have a powder on you, you’ll be good to go! x
