From My Head Tomatoes

Aside from them helping create the best pun ever, tomatoes are also one of my favourite foods. Everyone says, you’re either a creamy food person or a spicy food person and I am definitely the latter. This means a lot of sauces for meals I have use tomatoes as a base, I also love eating tomatoes on their own. Cherry tomatoes on the vine are a real treat!

Fruit.

Yes, tomatoes my friends are a fruit. A real tasty one! No, we don’t tend to eat them as a fruit (although I am know to eat them like an apple) but botanically they are.

They come in a range of colours from yellow and orange to green and purple. Along with different sizes and shapes, hello plum tomatoes.

Vitamins and minerals.

Tomatoes are a great source of vitamins and minerals. They’re packed with vitamin C! One medium tomato provides around 28% of your daily intake.

There’s also potassium, vitamin K and folate. These vitamins help blood pressure, help blood to clot and also help with normal tissue function.

Great for the heart.

Heart attacks and strokes are some of the most common causes of death. Evidence and studies have shown that antioxidants can help to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. Tomatoes have these properties, along with fighting inflammation and markers of oxidative stress. They can also decrease the risk of blood clotting.

Prevent cancer.

Observational studies have seen links between tomatoes and tomato based products and fewer incidences of prostate. lung and stomach cancers. It’s also been seen that high concentrations of carotenoids, found in high amounts of tomatoes, may protect against breast cancer.

Of course these are just observational studies and there’s no proven link, I think it’s just really interesting, which is why I’m letting you know!

Amazing skin.

Lycopene, which is a carotenoid and antioxidant which protects against cell damage, may protect you from sunburn. What I find interesting about this is if you think of those living in the Mediterranean, they have a diet rich in olives, tomatoes etc and they have the most beautiful olive skin that rarely gets burnt. Make you think about it right?

Tomatoes.

Overall, tomatoes are not only a super delicious food and additional to all meals, they have so many great benefits. From your heart, to your skin and even your blood, these snazzy fruits are something you should definitely keep adding to your diet.

What’s your favourite way to use tomatoes? I’d love to know!

Love, always – B
